As an individual who grew up reading the Wrinkle in Time series beautifully written by Madeline L’Engle, I had high expectations for this film. These expectations were further elevated by the cast that this film brought to the screen- Oprah Winfrey, Reece Witherspoon, Mindy Kalling, Chris Pine, as well as other skilled actors and actresses filled the cast of what many said would be the “New Wizard of Oz”. While I thought the movie was cute and had a good message of confidence layered within the plot line, the movie overall fell short for me. I think it would have been much better as a Netflix series or even a set of movies. The books are so rich and full of detail, adventure, and color that simply could not be filled by the 2 hour long special effect-full film.
I was impressed by the costuming and special effects that filled the wide screen of the film. I think ultimately it is what saved it as a successful vs unsuccessful film. i also think the backing of Oprah and Reece Witherspoon following the Golden Globes helped motivate individuals to see what the film was about, and why they felt compelled to take the role. I overall understand entirely why they chose to participate in the movie. the message of female courage and rising up to your potential and who you are is inspiring for young girls. It is a message that needs to be heard. However, I think as far as films go, it would have been better executed in multiple movies or a series such as A Series of Unfortunate Events.
